General: This is a brand new place to play poker that just opened in September 2004, so it's hard to write much of a review as not much is going on here yet. There are benefits to signing up as there are daily freerolls for $50 and every weekend a tiny amount of player points (2 and 4) will get you into the $200 and $1000 giveaway tournaments.
On an average weeknight about 200-220 people play the $50 freeroll. Unfortunately there isn't as much action in the ring games as there are only a handful of active tables at a time.
Games: Hold'Em, 5 Card Stud, 7 card Stud, Omaha
Aside from the freerolls and player points tournaments I mentioned earlier, there are no other tournaments available. With the limited action at the ring tables, your options are pretty limited there as well. Interestingly, this is one of few places you can play 5 card stud online, though that isn't worth much if there are no active tables.
Software/Servers: With any company just starting up you can expect some problems. There were a few times when I couldn't log on to Tropics, and I've downloaded enough software updates to last me for the rest of my life. These things have started to smooth themselves out.
The software isn't too pretty, though. It looks cheap. I'm not much of a fan of the sounds either, as it uses a sound from AOL instant messenger that I never liked. I imagine it will continue to improve over time, but as things stand it is not nearly as good as some of its competitors.
Bonus: Tropics offers an impressive 50% bonus on first deposits up to $120. Their refer-a-friend program offers $65, but unlike others your friend has to earn 300 player points before you get paid. Most points or raked hand requirements are considerably lower than that to earn friends bonus money.
Conclusion: It's worth signing up to play freerolls, and if you do make a deposit your chances are pretty good to take home part of the $1200 in prize money given away every weekend in the player points tourneys. I will check back in with these guys and update this review in a couple months.
